CRJ 332 Hate Crime and Bias

This course will draw from sociological, psychological and criminological sources to examine hate and prejudice as it manifests in hate crime and bias incidents in America and throughout the world. It will explore methodologies deigned to prevent or respond to such offenses, rehabilitate perpetrators and aid victims/survivors. While drawing from historic events, from lynchings in the segregated South to violent episodes in pre- and post-Holocaust Europe, the course will focus on contemporary incidents targeting people because of their ethnicity/race, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, national origin or other identity. Topics covered may include incidents motivated by antisemitism, antitziganism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia and misogyny, including murder, violence, sexual assault, arson, vandalism and other bias-motivated crime, as well as hate speech and online activity.
