Pre-Dental Hygiene
The admission requirements vary from school to school, and hence, it is important to obtain admission requirements for the school you are interested in attending. For example the Dental Hygiene program at UT, Memphis requires 60 semester hours of coursework. The following courses are required for admission: English, nine semester hours (ENG 101, ENG 102, and either ENG 215 or ENG 216); Speech, three semester hours (SPEE 220); Psychology, six semester hours: Sociology, six semester hours; General Biology, three semester hours (BIO 111); Microbiology, four semester hours (BIO 203); Anatomy and Physiology, eight semester hours (BIO 213, BIO 214); General Chemistry, eight semester hours (CHEM 111, CHEM 112); six semster hours of US History (HIS 201, HIS 202); three semester hours of medical terminology; three semester hours of nutrition; and 9 semester hours of electives.Tennessee State University is another example of a Dental Hygiene program that requires 18 semester hours of coursework. The following courses are required for admission: English, three semester hours (ENG 101); Microbiology, four semester hours (BIO 203); Anatomy and Physiology, eight semester hours (BIO 213 and BIO 214); and a humanities course. Admission to dental hygiene school is very competitive. Satisfactory completion of all requirements does not guarantee admission to dental hygiene school.
